The Decision
After sixteen years of love, laughter, and life together, Vernon and Befekadu knew one thing for sure, they were meant to be parents. Their recent marriage only deepened that desire. But like so many couples hoping to adopt, they werent quite sure how or when that dream would become a reality.
When they discovered LifeLong Adoptions, something just clicked. From their very first interaction, they felt seen, heard, and supported. “The agency was so attentive. We could feel the passion from the staff, and they were incredibly encouraging”, they shared. “What stood out most was LifeLong’s commitment to supporting LGBTQ+ families.” That reassurance gave Vernon the confidence to take the lead and together, they took their first step toward building their family.
The Waiting Process
Vernon and Befekadu kept their adoption journey mostly to themselves, only sharing small bits with their loved ones. The decision to grow their family was deeply personal, and while the waiting process came with challenges, it also brought growth.
“The home study process broke us down”, Vernon recalled as both he and Befekadu laughed. “But in the best way.” It forced them to reflect on their relationship, their values, and their readiness to be parents. It brought them even closer together.
During the wait, they connected with a few expectant mothers, but things didnt work out. It was hard, and at times disappointing. But through it all, their faith never wavered. They believed deep down that the right child would come into their lives when the time was right.
Meeting the Birth Parents
After many emotional ups and downs, they finally got the call. An expectant mother wanted to connect and from the very beginning, there was a spark. The conversations flowed easily, and as they got to know one another, the bond between them grew. Months later, the moment they had dreamed of arrived, it was time. They packed their bags and made the trip to meet her and the birth father.
“We were nervous and excited all at once”, they recalled. The meeting was emotional, beautiful, and affirming. “We were ready!”
Still, they stayed grounded. “The feeling was amazing but nothing was final, so I remained cautious”, stated Befekadu. Only when they were finally holding their son in their arms when everything was truly official, did they allow themselves to exhale. Vernon recalls how the hospital staff was so supportive and embraced them. “They were like angels”.
Life as a Family
Today, Vernon and Befekadu are proud dads to their son, Adonis, who has added even more love to this awesome family.
They remain in touch with the birth parents, sending photos and updates. “We wanted an open adoption because we want our son to know his full story to know how loved he is by all of us”. When asked if they would go through it all again, their answer was instant, “Yes, it was worth every moment” .
Words of Wisdom
“Our journey wasnt quick, it took 4 1/2 years”. But looking back, they wouldnt change a thing. Their message to others starting this journey was one filled with certainty, “saddle up for the ride, it’s not always easy, and it may not unfold the way you expect. But trust the process, keep your heart open, your faith strong, and your mind focused on the love waiting at the end. When it happens, it will be everything its meant to be”.
